Are students given too much homework?

So I have to write an essay on any topic and I figured I would write about the FACT that students ARE given too much homework. Teachers seem to have a belief that there cl is the most important in the school and ign busywork homework ignments. I know from experience of taking AP, college, and honors cles (I'm enrolled in college in the high school courses) that the homework load given is too much. It is ridiculous that students like me are expected to maintain not only good grades for college, but partcipate in extracurricular activities, have jobs, volunteer, etc and still have hours (usually at least 5-6) of homework after school. Consequently, I spend around 15 hours a day on homework and an additional 2 hours at school for extra curricular activities. This is crazy especially when schoolwork is just checked for completion. It is counterproductive as it causes stress on the body and leaves little room for teens to enjoy themselves when they are young. An hour or two of homework should be efficient to reinforce the concepts learned in school. Your thoughts?
