What's up with women writing to dangerous prisoners. How many men write to female prisoners?

I think the women who write to dangerous felons are mentally unbalanced and in need of counseling. My take on it is that they are needy, lonely and seeking the love of someone who can't leave them. Who else better than someone behind bars? That person is never going to walk away from her. The prisoner feeds the insecurity by sending the woman tokens of "affection", writing back, making her feel "special." For someone who is socially inept or has been wounded by rejection, that can be a very powerful tie. The women can excuse the felon's behavior, even deny that he's dangerous and may even believe he's been unjustly accused.
