HELP! Smelly litterbox!?

What is a good clumping litter that will cover smell and will not be dangerous to my kitty if she ingests it (clay litter can block intestines - she has a lot of fur between her toes that litter sticks to and I don't want to take chances). I am using feline pine scoop right now but since she has gotten bigger it just doesn't do anything for odor control - if you don't scoop it within ten minutes the whole room smells like litterbox. I was thinking of trying one of those gel crystal litters - how do those work? It has to be clumping though because I live in an apt. and I don't want to have to carry out the whole box every day.
