Is it OK to place a television over a fireplace (rarely used)?

My house has a provision for TV over the fireplace mantle. The landing is about 1&1/2 foot above the fireplace. It doesnt heat up much. I have seen many houses with this provision, but am not sure whether its OK. But still want to make sure, since we are buying a new TV next week.
