Do religious people in desperate situations display more faith in their imaginary god?

And the greater the desperation, the more fervent are their prayers? If so, does this example of human behavior provide more proof that a god is real or does it provide proof that humans are irrational creatures and their gods are merely a product of their fallible minds?
